How to order your grille.

  1. Determine the type of grille you need.
    • Is your filter located behind the grille or at the furnace?
      • If your filter is located behind the grille, you need a Wood Return Air Filter Grille.
      • If your filter is located at the furnace, you need a Wood Return Air Grille (Panel Only)
  2. How to measure for a Wood Return Air Filter Grille
    • The simplest way is to determine your filter size. If you are replacing an existing grille, simply order a Wood Return Air Filter Grille that Matches your filter size. For example, if you have a 14x20x1 filter, you will need either a 14x20 Wood Return Air Filter Grille or a 20x14 Wood Return Air Filter Grille, depending on the orientation of your existing grille. A 14x20 Wood Return Air Filter Grille is 14” wide and 20” tall as opposed to a 20x14 Wood Return Air Filter Grille, which is 20” wide & 14” tall.
    • After you choose the correct size and orientation, you can upgrade to one of our optional edges. You will also have the option to select a 2” or 4” deep filter housing if that applies to your system. (this is not particularly common)
    • The actual finished size of a wood return air grille is 4 ½” larger than the filter (2 ¼”) around all 4 sides of the filter itself, so you want to be sure you have plenty of room around the existing filter. If you are close to a casing, baseboard, wall, outlet, or other obstruction, please call our friendly customer service department. There are usually simple, no-cost, modifications we can make to adapt the grille to your space.

What if I don’t have an existing filter, just a rough opening in the wall?

In the case of new construction or a major remodel, you may just have a rough opening. In this case, we can use the specifications chart to decode the opening. Simply measure the width and height of the rough opening. The filter should be ¼” to 3” smaller than the rough opening, and you can use the rough opening column of the specifications chart to determine the filter size.

    3. How to measure for a Wood Return Air Gille (Panel Only)

    • If your filter is located at the furnace, then you will most likely need the Panel Grille. This grille has no filter housing and generally does not open to gain access to the duct or plenum box. In this case, you can measure the existing grille and use the size chart on this website to determine the correct size. Typically, you will want the finished outside dimension of the wood grille, which his 1 ¼” larger than the callout size, to be slightly larger than the existing grille to ensure an adequate mounting surface an cover up any marks left behind by the existing grille.
    • Another option is to remove the existing grille and measure the rough opening like you would in a new construction or major remodel situation. In this case, you would measure the width and height of the opening and select an appropriate grille size based on the specifications chart on our website. You should choose the largest grille that fits your opening to take full advantage of the airflow available. For example, a 14x20 Wood
      Return Air Grille would cover a 14” x 20” opening, but it only gives you a mounting surface of 5/8” on all four sides. Though this is adequate. A 16x22 Wood Return Air Grille gives you a 1 5/8” mounting surface, and allows you the full air flow available in the opening.

      Remember, orientation is important, and you want to order width first, then height, and our decorative edge options are available to select as you choose your grille sizes.
